Northern Health Shield Reaches 1,006 People in Nalogu Despite Rain and Difficult Road Conditions
Sometimes, the impact of a medical outreach is measured not only by the number of people served, but also by the determination required to reach them.
On September 26, 2026, Give Basic Needs brought the Northern Health Shield to Nalogu in the Gushegu Municipality, providing preventive healthcare services and essential health supplies to the community. By the end of the event, 1,006 patient encounters had been recorded.
Getting there, however, became one of the most challenging parts of the outreach.
A Difficult Journey to Nalogu
The day began with our healthcare contractors traveling from Tamale to the event location. Along the way, one of the buses transporting the team broke down. A replacement bus had to travel from Tamale before the journey could continue.
The team pressed forward, but another challenge was waiting.
A few kilometers from Nalogu, the rainy-season road conditions made it impossible for another vehicle to proceed. The vehicle became stuck, and repeated attempts to free it were unsuccessful.
Rather than turn back, our contractors got out and continued toward the community on foot.
The medical supplies and equipment still inside the vehicle also had to reach the event grounds. Tricycles were organized to transport the supplies from the stranded vehicle into Nalogu.
Then the rain came.
A heavy downpour disrupted the canopies and event setup that the ground team had already prepared. After a bus breakdown, a stranded vehicle and contractors having to walk toward the community, the outreach faced yet another setback.
For a moment, the day's plans were at risk.
We Set Up Again and Got to Work
When the rain subsided, the team did not give up.
The event grounds were reorganized, the setup was restored, and the medical equipment and supplies were transported into the community by tricycle. Our healthcare contractors prepared their stations, and the Northern Health Shield outreach finally began.
What followed demonstrated why overcoming those challenges mattered.
By the end of the event, 1,006 patient encounters had been recorded, making Nalogu another major Northern Health Shield outreach reaching more than a thousand people in a single community event.
Screening, Vaccination and Preventive Care
The Northern Health Shield focuses on bringing preventive healthcare closer to communities through infectious-disease screening, vaccination, deworming, health education and essential preventive supplies.
At Nalogu, screening identified 23 Hepatitis B positive cases, 22 Hepatitis C positive cases and one HIV positive case, for a total of 46 positive cases.
The recorded positivity rates were 2.8% for Hepatitis B, 2.7% for Hepatitis C and 0.1% for HIV, with an overall positivity rate of 4.6%.
The team also administered 641 Hepatitis B vaccines, helping provide preventive protection against an infection for which positive cases were identified during the same outreach.
Preventive support extended beyond screening and vaccination. The outreach distributed:
- 875 antibacterial soaps
- 370 sanitary pads
- 306 condoms
- 489 adult doses of Albendazole
- 392 child doses of Albendazole
- 77 doses of Ivermectin
The event also reached a significant number of children. 54% of recorded patients were children under 16, while 46% were adults aged 16 and above. Women and girls represented 64% of patients, compared with 36% male.
What If We Had Turned Back?
The Nalogu outreach leaves us with an important question:
What would have happened if we had turned back?
The bus breakdown could have stopped us. The difficult road could have stopped us. The stranded vehicle could have stopped us. The heavy rain and disrupted setup could have stopped us.
Had the outreach been abandoned, more than a thousand people would have missed the opportunity that day to access these preventive health services close to their community. Among the people who came were individuals whose screening results identified Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV.
That puts every challenge encountered on the journey into perspective.
For communities where accessing preventive healthcare can require traveling considerable distances, bringing services closer to the people matters.
More Than a One-Day Medical Event
The Northern Health Shield is designed around a broader understanding of community health.
Screening can help identify infections that require further attention. Vaccination provides preventive protection. Deworming addresses another common health need, while sanitary pads, condoms, antibacterial soap and health education provide practical resources that people can use beyond the event itself.
The programme also incorporates WASH—Water, Sanitation and Hygiene—interventions, recognizing that improving health involves both access to healthcare and the environmental conditions that influence people's wellbeing.
This approach connects medical outreach with longer-term community interventions, including boreholes that provide communities with continued access to clean water.
1,006 Reasons It Was Worth Continuing
Nalogu was not an easy outreach.
But our healthcare contractors, ground team, logistics team and community members adapted each time circumstances changed.
When transportation failed, another option was found. When vehicles could no longer proceed, people walked. When supplies could not travel by bus, tricycles carried them. When the rain disrupted the setup, it was built again.
And at the end of it all, 1,006 patient encounters had been recorded, 641 Hepatitis B vaccines administered, hundreds of people supported with deworming medication, and hundreds more received essential preventive health and hygiene supplies.
Nalogu reminded us that sometimes making an impact means refusing to allow difficult circumstances to become the end of the story.
To our healthcare professionals, contractors, ground team, supporters and the people of Nalogu who made the outreach possible, thank you.
Together, we continue working toward healthier and stronger communities across Northern Ghana.
Small Acts. Big Happy.
